This is a self improvement course that I have begun taking. It is free so I am putting the information here for anyone that might be interested.

I’m evaluating a multi-media course on blogging from the folks at Simpleology. For a while, they’re letting you snag it for free if you post about it on your blog.

It covers:

  • The best blogging techniques.
  • How to get traffic to your blog.
  • How to turn your blog into money.

I’ll let you know what I think once I’ve had a chance to check it out. Meanwhile, go grab yours while it’s still free.

The Quilting Project:A Silent Auction of Quilts

Posted by Ginidenninger on February 21st, 2008

quilt-4.jpgquilt-3.jpgquilt-2.jpgquilt-1.jpgRochester, NY is a cradle of socially active groups. Among them is the program “Women Helping Girls” run by the the Rochester chapter of the American Association of University Women. Organised 15 years ago to pair girls with adult mentors, this years auction is the second major fund raiser held by this group.

Women Helping Girls works with about 60 teenage girls from the Wilson Commencement Academy, one of the Rochester School Districts sucessful magnet schools. Ranked 24th in the nation by Newsweek Magazine, the school focuses on science, medicine, and engineering. Women Helping Girls purpose is to encourage girls to graduate from high school and go on to college, which is now happening with the first group of girls who participated in this effort.

The event is a silent auction of more than 30 quilts donated by individual quilters as well as quilting groups such as The Genesee Valley Quilt Club and the Irondequoit Quilt Club. There will be small quilts suitable for wall hanging, regular quilts as well as an unusual origami art quilt made from maps! Kitty Van Bortal will emcee the event.

This fundraiser takes place on Sunday, February 24th between 1-4:00PM, at the Otto A. Schults Community Center at Nazareth College, East Avenue in Pittsford. Admission is $20.00. You can buy tickets at the Parkleigh on Park Avenue, through Van Bortel Subaru on Rt 96 in Victor or by calling Lori Marra at 585-943-2039.

Quilts seen are not representative of quilts being auctioned off. They are exhibited for illustrative content only.

Electrical Safety In Your Home

Posted by Ginidenninger on February 18th, 2008

fire-safety.jpgYour home is your haven, the place where you feel safe and secure. Yet, every year many people are hurt or killed because of home fires, many of which are caused by electrical problems. Even an electrical shock can seriously injure. Don’t neglect important safety issues.

One of the first things you can do is a walk through to check for damaged outlets. Loose fitting plugs can overheat and cause a fire. If you see a dark spot on the wall above the outlet, that is a sure sign the plug needs to be replaced. Other things to look for are broken plugs and cracked or broken housing. In fact, all older plugs should be updated. Newer ones accommodate a three-prong cord. And never, never remove the third prong!

Be sure electrical extension cords are not overloaded and their use is temporary. Extension cords are not strong enough to use on a permanent basis. Your extension cords should have a safety closure to prevent young children from injury. If it shows any signs of fraying, throw it out.

Even the smallest of children can be educated on electrical safety issues. It is important to pay close attention and to teach children the safety rules regarding this important utility. Caution them on the dangers of mishandling anything electrical. You can purchase inexpensive items that prevent very small children from putting their tiny fingers in a plug.

First and foremost - water and electricity do not mix. If an appliance falls in water, turn off the power source at the panel board and then unplug the appliance. Do not use it again until you’re sure it is thoroughly dry. If you are plugging something in while out of doors, check to make sure it is rated for the power needed and that it will safely handle the job.

Many people use space heaters in chilly weather. They are meant for supplemental heat only. Do not ever use them in a room where children are unsupervised and keep them clear of anything that might cause a fire, such as clothing, bedding or draperies and curtains.

If in doubt, contact a qualified electrician. Better to be safe than sorry.

Rochester’s Susan B. Anthony Home

Posted by Ginidenninger on February 8th, 2008

Rochesters latest to F. Douglas & S. B. AnthonyAfternoon tea with Frederick DouglasMiss Anthony & close friend Mrs. Elizabeth CadyMiss Susan B. Anthonysusan-b-anthony-house.jpgOne of my favorite museums is the Susan B. Anthony House. To her and all her cohorts, I am forever grateful. They stood up and demanded to be treated as equals in society by demanding the right to vote. While Miss Anthony never was accorded that right, her life-long crusade allows me to cast a vote. This is especially important to me this year, after all being a presidental election year, where we even have a woman - Hillary Clinton, running for president!

The museum shares the story of Susan B. Anthony’s lifelong struggle to gain voting rights for women and equal rights for all. In addition to fighting for womens rights, Miss Anthony also was an abolitionist. This sparked her long friendship with famous abolitionist & fellow Rochester citizen, Frederick Douglas. Near the house is Anthony-Douglas Square where a wonderful outdoor sculpture sits, life-size images of Miss Douglas and Mr. Anthony sharing an afternoon visit and cup of tea.

The Susan B. Anthony House was the home of this legendary American civil rights leader during the most politically active period of her life, and the site of her famous arrest for voting in 1872. The house docents delight in retelling the story of her arrest and time in court. As the story unfolds, you can practically see and hear Miss Douglas indignation. Touring the house you are experiencing the rooms where Miss Anthony slept, ate, worked and died. You become familiar with her times & family, especially her sister Mary who is the woman behind the super-power figure Miss Susan was. Without Mary, I do wonder how the story would have turned out.

There have been two capital campaigns in the past 10 years, which raised funds to
rehabilitate #19 Madison Street for use as a Visitors’ Center and convert #21 Madison Street to a parking lot. The exterior of Miss Anthonys House was restored by securing the foundation, replacing the roof, re-pointing the brick, and repairing the chimneys. Additionally, all the mechanical and electrical systems were updated .
Now attention is being given to the interior. The full interior restoration includes comprehensive conservation and restoration of ceilings, walls, floors, wood and wood trim, lighting, and stairs, and will require the services of experts in historic plaster, paint, wallpaper, and glass conservation. It will touch every room in the House.

The goal is to restore Miss Anthony’s House to its authentic, historic condition when she last lived here.

The House remains open during the restoration, and many visitors have enjoyed seeing this work in progress. If you haven’t been to the Susan B. Anthony House recently, come and see all that has been accomplished. While there, browse the gift store, sign up for membership as a show of support for the house or give a donation towards the restoration of this delightful museum that reveals one of Rochesters most illustious and famous citizens, whose work has touched every one of us, man or woman!

The House is open 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
Tuesday through Sunday / Closed Mondays

Admission costs:
$6/Adult
$5/Senior Citizens 65 & over
$3/Student
$3/Child (12 & under)

Group tours of more than 12 by appointment: (585) 235-6124 extension 19.

Why live in Rochester NY?

Posted by Ginidenninger on January 13th, 2008

Winter in RochesterRochester, New York is located in one of the most scenic areas of the country. It lies next to Lake Ontario, and near the five Finger Lakes. We have rolling hills covered with woods or lush farm lands. Rochester has the four seasons of weather, without great extremes of weather like hurricanes or tornadoes.
We have a burgeoning high-tech industry beginning to boom supported by our many institutions of higher learning: University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Geneseo, Roberts Wesleyan College, St. John Fisher College & Nazareth College, Monroe Community College, Finger Lakes Community College.
We have many things to do with our leisure time. We have wonderful culture; a large music scene including the Rochester Philharmonic; art museums, various architectural & historical museums, including the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum, Susan B. Anthony House and the George Eastman House.
There is a thriving restaurant and night club scene. You can eat food from almost any ethnic variation in Rochester. We have world class chefs and wineries all within driving distance from our homes. If you don’t like to eat out, bring in take-out from one of the many restaurants that offer it or from Wegmans our home grown grocers, who are now world famous for their dazzling stores.
There is a vibrant sports scene here with many teams from the recreational to professional such as the Razor Sharks current Continental Basketball Association champions, Rochester Raging Rhinos our soccer team and the professional arena football team, the Rochester Raiders.
Did I mention our well maintained zoo located near the beautiful Genesee River Gorge?
On top of all that, Rochester has a great standard of living…you can buy a great home here for a reasonable price. Call me for information on the great homes that can be had at reasonable prices. Why pay rent when you don’t have to? Gini Denninger. Hunt ERA Real Estate. 585-760-3880
